Dear Gov Abbott,

As a Christian, I join Catholic bishops in your state and faith leaders across the country to ask that you reconsider your decision to end the refugee resettlement program in Texas. There is nothing pro-life or Christian about slamming the door in the face of those who are fleeing violence and persecution. Please don’t put politics before the Gospel command to do unto others as we would have them do unto us. 

Pope Francis reminds us that refugees should never be treated as “pawns on the chessboard of humanity” and that when political leaders put up “insurmountable barriers” to those seeking asylum we create a “throw-away culture.” 

Please reflect on the core teachings of your faith and reverse this policy that will harm vulnerable people who deserve to live in safety and with dignity.
