Not one dime to oppress immigrant families

Our nation’s budget is a moral document that reflects our deepest priorities as a nation. As people of faith, we believe in the dignity of all people and remain committed to strengthening families and communities. As Congress determines how to fund the federal government, we call on lawmakers to reject funding for the Trump administration’s cruel and unjust immigration enforcement.

Seeking asylum is a human right that must be protected. The Trump administration is aggressively attacking our legal and moral responsibility to welcome families seeking safety. This year, we’ve witnessed thousands of innocent children torn from the arms of their parents, the tear gassing of people seeking asylum, and a 7-year-old child dying of dehydration in government custody. Congress must allocate not one dime to these immoral practices.

In an effort to score political points, President Trump is demanding that Congress approve his immoral, wasteful border wall and increase funding for detention and deportations. Rather than agree to this sinful ultimatum, legislators must restore necessary asylum protections and address the root causes that force people to flee for their lives.

People of faith reject this administration’s white supremacist policies and oppose any funding of President Trump’s vanity wall, additional detention beds and more immigration agents. All of our faith traditions call us to love our neighbors as ourselves and reject violence and brutality.

We demand that Congress stop funding the Trump administration’s dehumanizing detention and deportation machine, and work for justice for all.
