Armed white supremacists, spurred on by the direct incitement and treasonous lies of President Trump and his Congressional Republican enablers, physically attacked the United States Capitol to stop the certification of the results of the 2020 election. This was an assault on our country, our people, and our most cherished values.
Thankfully, the attempted coup failed, but the American people need accountability and swift action.
As people of faith committed to justice, integrity and democracy, we call on Congress and the Cabinet to immediately remove President Trump from office -- whether by impeachment or invoking the 25th amendment to the Constitution.
President Trump and his enablers must be held responsible for inciting this attack on our nation. Without swift accountability, the harm done to our people will only grow worse.
While the President desperately attempts to cling to power by overturning the clear will of the majority of Americans voters, our faith commits us to build a true democracy where the dignity and freedom of every person is respected.
