Tell Gov DeWine: Democracy Means Every Voice Counts

On Friday, January 6, Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed into law HB 458, one of the most extreme voter suppression laws in the country. It eliminates early in-person voting the Monday before election day, limits ballot drop boxes to ONE per county, reduces the number of days for late-arriving ballots to still county and creates a photo ID requirement to vote.

Email Gov. Mike DeWine to let him know where you stand and to remind him that, as people of faith this is not how we listen to others and it’s certainly not how we love them.

Gov. DeWine,

As a person of faith and an Ohioan, I am writing to express my anger at your recent signing of HB 458 into law. My faith teaches me that we love our neighbors by listening to them. Our sacred freedom to vote is one of the most important ways in which we hear the voices and concerns of those around us. HB 458 makes it harder for millions of Ohioans to vote and silences the voices of those who must be heard in our state.

This new law is a travesty. It eliminates early in-person voting the Monday before election day, limits ballot drop boxes to ONE per county, reduces the number of days for late-arriving ballots to still count and creates a photo ID requirement to vote. It creates huge barriers to the ballot box and will create massive confusion at the polls come election time. We should be making it easier for people to vote, not harder.

I am a part of the millions of faithful Ohioans who will continue to fight back against unjust laws like HB 458. Fighting for our democracy is in the spiritual DNA of our collective and diverse faith traditions. In spite of the setbacks you’ve created, we have seen throughout history that when faith leaders join together and push back, we can and will protect our communities and hold elected officials like you accountable.
