My faith reminds me that our nation must begin to uphold the principles of equal protection and equal dignity for all of God’s children. Modern policing disproportionately harms Black communities and upholds white supremacy. The BREATHE Act addresses inequality at the root, divesting funding from systems of punishment and surveillance and reinvesting in infrastructure that supports growth, learning and equity. I urge you to co-sponsor this legislation. How we spend our money is a moral choice. We cannot bring positive change without fully funding schools, housing, culturally competent mental health care, and support for people who use drugs. So much more than simply defunding the police, the BREATHE Act is a bold moral statement that we can and should be protecting our environment, investments in our communities, and the labor of all workers.
