Tell Congress: Georgia residents deserve to be put first

Our faith traditions call us to help create a world that honors the dignity of all people. It’s time for us to push for reforms that provide stability to our electoral systems and address inequity in the right to vote. The recent voter suppression legislation laws enacted in Georgia will make it hard for people to use their voice and advance effective change.

The For the People Act (S.1) is a bold, comprehensive bill that would increase the accessibility and transparency of our democracy by bolstering the power of voters and dismantling centuries of voter disenfranchisement. We must demand that all are given the sacred right to vote.

Urge your senators to protect our right to vote and pass S.1, the For the People Act, even if it requires a change to Senate procedure.

Tell Your Senators:

I am writing to you today about the urgent need to pass the For the People Act (S.1) and prioritize a democracy that reflects the value of all people. Our faith calls us to correct injustices, support the most vulnerable, nurture human potential, root out systemic racism, and protect the health and well-being of all members of society. A broken democracy has clear and detrimental impacts for how our nation can collectively answer that call. Our democracy cannot be fully restored without ensuring that our voting system promotes inclusivity.

After the harmful voter suppression laws enacted in Georgia, it is clear that dark money is trying to flood our elections. Wealthy donors undermine the integrity of our democracy and enable oppressive systems to grow stronger. Millions of Americans--especially in marginalized, Black and Brown communities--are being stripped of the right to vote. You need to quickly pass federal protections for the sacred right to vote. The House version of this legislation (H.R.1) has already passed and now it's up to the Senate to ensure the bill becomes law. We demand democracy reforms that provide stability to our electoral systems and address inequity in the right to vote.

The For the People Act (S.1) is a bold, comprehensive bill we need because the problems in our democracy are deep, systemic, and wide-ranging. The scope and size of the bill reflects the myriad issues that need to be addressed, and the ability to restore faith in democracy cannot be done through piecemeal changes.

The voting and election reforms in S.1, written by the late Rep. John Lewis, would set federal baseline standards of access for every eligible voter, regardless of where they live. In light of the current attempts by many state legislatures to aggressively restrict access to the ballot after the 2020 election, failure to pass these federal reforms would be unconscionable.

Cosponsoring S.1 is not sufficient in these dire circumstances. We need leaders with the moral courage to take bold action in passing these reforms, even if that means ending the filibuster.

We need bold and robust legislation to ensure every voice is heard in our democracy. Our democracy is too precious for S.1 to be blocked by procedural hurdles in the Senate. For people of faith  this is not a matter of right versus left, but of right versus wrong.
