Members of Congress:
A sound democracy must have oversight and accountability as a check against corruption and the abuse of government power for personal gain. No public official, including the President of the United States, is above the law. As people of faith and Americans, we believe the light of transparency and truth will protect us from tyranny.
For these reasons, we commend the initiation of an impeachment inquiry into President Trump and call for it to be faithfully executed. Congress must now have the courage to follow the truth wherever it leads and fulfill its constitutional responsibility to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
The president stands accused, in a whistleblower complaint based on reports from half a dozen U.S. government officials, of using the power of his office to solicit illegal interference from a foreign country in the 2020 presidential election.
The gravity of the potential crimes described in the complaint filed by the whistleblower indicates the need for a thorough investigation. The American people are owed a full account of any corruption, obstruction and lawbreaking by members of the Trump administration -- including but not limited to the president himself and Attorney General William Barr.
Public service should be a high moral vocation. As people of faith, we call on all Members of Congress to pursue the impeachment inquiry in a spirit of courage and good faith.
All people have a right to live with dignity, well-being and freedom. Democracy helps facilitate these conditions. Tyranny chokes them. In the face of the accusations that President Trump has illegally abused the presidency for personal political advantage, the impeachment inquiry is an essential step in protecting our democratic system and the integrity of this nation.
