Tell Senate: Pass the Equality Act

Our faith traditions call us to help create a world that honors the dignity of all people. Congress needs to pass the Equality Act to protect all of us. It is a matter of justice.

As a person of faith, I believe every person is created with dignity. This is why I urge you to support and pass the Equality Act.

It is a moral travesty that nearly 2 out of 3 LGBTQ Americans report that they’ve experienced discrimination. In 29 states, there are no comprehensive protections for LGBTQ people. The patchwork of protections is inadequate, leaving our LGBTQ neighbors vulnerable to mistreatment. The Equality Act sets right what is wrong, by providing federal, comprehensive, explicit protection to everyone, no matter where they live.

The Equality Act honors the dignity and equality of our LGBTQ family and neighbors by guaranteeing them the freedoms and protections promised by the Constitution and our civil rights laws. The bill would ensure that no one can be turned away from a homeless shelter, denied a meal at a food bank, or refused disaster relief services simply because of who they are. It ensures that all of us, regardless of our sexual orientation or gender identity, are protected from discrimination in employment, health care and housing, instead of potentially losing equal rights when they cross state lines. This is a matter of dignity and justice.

Religious freedom is a cornerstone of our democracy, but it doesn’t give any of us the right to impose our beliefs on others, or to discriminate.

When everyone is truly free from discrimination, then we can fulfill our call to love our neighbors as ourselves. The Senate must pass the Equality Act immediately.
