For the first time in 30 years, Muslims, Jews, Christians, Sikhs, Baha’is, Hindus, Buddhists and Indigenous nations will observe holidays simultaneously, with celebrations of Ramadan, Passover, Easter, Vaisakhi, Mahavir Jayanti, Theravada New Year and the Gathering of Nations all occurring in April. At the same time we are witnessing a rise of intolerance and discriminatory laws that threaten our nation’s multiracial and multi-faith democracy.

Join Rev. Jen Butler and Dr. Maha Hilal for a virtual discussion of Dr. Hilal’s new book, Innocent Until Proven Muslim: Islamophobia, the War on Terror, and the Muslim Experience Since 9/11. 

Dr. Hilal is a researcher and writer on institutionalized Islamophobia and Co-founder of Justice for Muslims Collective. She is the founding Executive Director of the Muslim Counterpublics Lab, an organizer with Witness Against Torture and a Council member of the School of the Americas Watch. Innocent Until Proven Muslim sheds light on the last twenty years of the War on Terror including the role of official narrative in justifying the creation of a sprawling apparatus of state violence rooted in Islamophobia. Centering the impact of the War on Terror on Muslims and Muslim Americans, Dr. Hilal shares how some have internalized oppression, perpetuated collective responsibility, and how the lived experiences of Muslim Americans reflect what it means to live as part of a "suspect" community. Join Rev. Butler and Dr. Hilal as they discuss this book and explore what we can do to create a better future.

Fr. Bryan Massingale, a powerful voice on racial justice and the Catholic Church, will join Robert P. Jones, whose recent book White Too Long: The Legacy of White Supremacy in American Christianity, offers critical historical and present context for the rise of public white supremacy in the U.S. Following a conversation between these two scholars, Pulitzer Prize winning historian Marcia Chatelain will offer a response.
