Congress Must Begin Reparations Conversation

Full text of this organizational faith letter in support of HR 40 here.

Summary:

As people of faith, we know that
Black lives matter to God. That means we must work to bring equity and tear down white supremacy. To start that work, we are urging Congress to support the passage of H.R. 40, the Commission to Study and Develop Reparations Proposals for African Americans Act.

We must grapple with our legacy of slavery and discriminatory policies that have killed and exploited Black people for centuries and repent if we are to live out our nation’s promise of liberty and justice for all. H.R. 40 would establish a commission to examine the history of enslavement and discrimination in the United States from 1619 to the present and recommend appropriate remedies. During the 116th Congress, H.R. 40 had over 173 co-sponsors, and was endorsed by over 300 organizations across the country. The United States cannot move forward without properly addressing and atoning for the lasting harms of the nation’s original sin — the institution of slavery.

Please help us begin this moral journey by adding your name as a supporter of H.R. 40.
