The overturning of Roe is not a win for people of faith.
I stand with the overwhelming majority of faithful Ohioans and people of faith across the country who support abortion access and decry the extreme measures leaders in our state have taken to ban abortion. Across our traditions, and across race, our diverse communities of faith support the right to access legal abortion care. Black, Brown, Native, Asian and White; Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Hindu and Sikh – we are coming together as the moral majority.
Historically, faith has been used as a wedge issue to limit and ban access to reproductive care, including abortion care, perpetuating a narrative that just isn’t true. Most abortions are obtained by Christians and the majority of Christians in this country support access to safe and legal abortion care. We know that more than 60% of every religious and ethnic group except for white evangelicals opposed overturning Roe v. Wade.
Yet extremist judges and legislators have stripped Ohioans of the right to seek abortion healthcare. Their agenda, rooted in white Christian nationalism, is an unholy threat to freedom and flourishing. We will not allow our faith to be hijacked in order to deny people the reproductive and abortion care they need and desire.
Our mutli-faith coalition is committed to bringing God’s love and justice into the world. In these incredibly difficult times, our faith will light the way for our neighbors.
Our faith teaches us that we should have the ability to live with the dignity, autonomy and well-being God desires. It is our calling to protect people’s innate dignity, to respect their moral agency and to be co-creators with God ensuring that everyone has safe, healthy and sustainable communities where they can thrive and parent if they decide to do so.
Ohio faith leaders will continue to denounce and resist the criminalization of abortion.
We will use our voice and speak out.
We will no longer be the silent majority.
We are the moral majority.
